Shelf Life Episode 13: The Avengers Go Up For Sale $$

With the wake of the of the haunted shelf...

Tonight we’re heading back to Earth’s Mightiest… but also Earth’s Most Chaotic HR Department — the ’70s and ’80s Avengers. This is my second‑tier Avengers shelf, the one where the deep cuts live, the West Coast weirdos (WACOS) shine, the East Coast classics stand firm, and all the other legendaries hold the line.

And yes… as the title promised… some of these heroes are about to hit the open market. But we’ll get to that.

The Lineup

Before The Update...

Abomination and Marvel Legends Leader figure standing side by side for size comparison.

This shelf entry is a homage to the era when the Avengers roster changed every five minutes and half the team meetings ended with someone quitting, dying, or joining a circus.

You’ll spot:

  • East Coast Avengers — the classic backbone of the team

  • West Coast Avengers — the sun‑bleached, slightly unhinged cousins

  • Haunted Captain America (see entry 12),

But even with all that plastic glory, the shelf still has a few holes. And with any luck, the rumors about upcoming Marvel Legends releases will finally deliver: Tigra, Wonder Man, Mockingbird, Hercules, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Thor — all the rest of the legendaries that make up this beautifully dysfunctional family

    • Mantis — still waiting

    • Swordsman — still waiting

    • Firebird — still waiting

And to complete my East Coast Avenger team:

  • Dr. Druid — maybe one day, but I’m not holding my breath
  • Wasp (the version I actually want) — probably never happening

Which brings us to…

Kit‑Bash Time: The Wasp That Hasn’t Been Made

Since the Wasp I want seems nowhere on the Marvel Legends release horizon, I took matters into my own hands and made a kit‑bash Wasp.

What’s a kit‑bash? Basically, it’s a custom made figure. For me, the longer explanation is this: it’s when you upcycle or repurpose a figure using paint, accessories, and or parts from other figures to create something unique that the toy companies haven’t made. Or maybe it does exist, but you refuse to pay the ridiculous upsell prices — ha!

So I’m building my own Wasp… but that’ll be a story for another episode. Maybe I’ll call that entry “Sometimes the best figures are the ones you make yourself.” Or let me know if you have a better title in mind?

Shelf Updates & Rearrangements

Now the shelf looks tighter, more era‑specific, and way more befitting to the “Mighty Avengers soap opera.”

This episode wasn’t just a showcase — it was a renovation.

The figures that were updated or swapped out:

  • Black Widow — replaced with a cleaner, more era‑accurate version
  • Starfox — A brand new and much needed figure addition to the Marvel Legends line-up
  • Capcom Cap — upgraded to the new sculpt for Hasbro’s homage to Capcom Marvel videogames via Marvel Gameverse

On sale soon on my ebay!

As Promised: Figures Going Up for Sale

Since Black Widow and Captain America have been replaced, they’re officially heading to my eBay store. If you want a piece of Shelf Life history — or you just need these figures for your own lineup — they’ll be available shortly.

And speaking of things arriving soon…

Final Thoughts: Your Choice for The Next Episode

Now that the Avengers shelf is updated, I need your vote for what comes next:

  • Option A: The Spider‑Man shelf, packed with classic villains, symbiotes, and wall‑crawling chaos
  • Option B: The mystery team destined for the Shelf of Mishap — the place where things go wrong, figures fall over, and chaos reigns

Which one should I tackle next? Spider‑Man or the new mystery shelf? Drop your vote in the comments with Option A or Option B.

And regardless of the outcome, there’s only one more episode left before the polls close and the shelf gets filled. Choose your champion:

  • Original X‑Force (Rob Liefeld)
  • Jim Lee X‑Men (Blue & Gold Teams)
  • Uncanny X‑Force Strike Team

Drop your thoughts in the comments — I read every single one.
