Shelf Life Episode 15 — May The 4th Be With You!

The Force awakens on my shelves...

The Force awakens on my shelves tonight, and honestly… it feels good as I celebrate Star Wars month.

May the 4th hits differently when you’re surrounded by plastic legends, questionable design choices, and the occasional “what were they thinking?” creature from the LucasArts vault (more on that later). This year I’m diving straight into unboxings and reviews for the new Vintage Collection Greedo and Jabba the Hutt Playset—two figures that instantly pull you back into that grimy, wonderful corner of the galaxy where you’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Between the crackle of unboxing toys from their packages, I’ll be dropping some movie quotes, some parody, and a whole lot of collector mischief. Because if you can’t get weird on May the 4th, when can you?

In the meantime let’s take a tour of my Star Wars collection…

See the latest Figures Going Up for Sale in my eBay store. If you want a piece of Shelf Life history — or you just need figures for your own lineup — they’ll be available shortly.

And speaking of things arriving soon…

Vintage Collection Wishlist — The Creatures That Still Haunt My Dreams

  • Rancor Monster (the HasLab tragedy still stings)
  • Wampa
  • Tauntauns
  • Lak Sivrak “wolf‑face” — the ambient legend himself
  • Trash Compactor Monster — the dianoga, tentacled monster of the Death Star
  • C‑3PO in true metallic gold, 3.75″ scale (Not yellow. Not mustard. Not “sunset bronze.” Metallic gold.)

CZ‑3 “Clown‑Face Droid” — Retro Collection Pre‑Order (June 5th)

I don’t know who at Lucasfilm decided on a carney vibe for a background droid, but CZ‑3—laughable as it is—has finally made it to action figure immortality. Retro Collection is leaning hard into the ambient and lesser‑known characters this year, and honestly… I’m liking it.

The reason is simple: the design has redeemable features. You can see hints of Ralph McQuarrie’s influence in the mix, and CZ‑3’s early Star Wars cameos make it a fun topic of conversation. I might just have to get a CZ‑3 for my collection.

Yakface — The Infamous Jabba’s Palace Resident

Speaking of “what were they thinking when designing these characters”—Yakface. Proof that even one of the greatest franchises ever built can occasionally trip over its own creature shop. But here’s the thing:

Are characters like CZ‑3 and Yakface really “epic fails”?

Or are they a fun way to spice up the galaxy far, far away?

They’re the reason collectors like us smile when someone sees our shelves and says, “Wait… why do you have that?”

Lak Sivrak Lives

Speaking of epic fails, why did George Lucas keep characters like CZ‑3 and Yakface, yet try to quietly sweep Lak Sivrak “The Wolf‑Face” out of the Special Edition Cantina scenes? Sorry, Mr. Lucas—just like Boba Fett, wolf‑face is here to stay.

Although at this point, it’s probably time to stop hoping for an official figure and just kit‑bash a Lak Sivrak together for myself.

Shelf Life Verdict

I’m ready to add a CZ‑3 into my collection.

I’m happy to welcome my new figure updates for Jabba the Hutt and Greedo to my shelves… which means my older versions will be heading to eBay soon, in case you’re on the hunt for those figures.
